Marta CARRANZA 2006 Professional Advising Leadership (PAL)
Executive Summary
• Project Description
Title: Community Colleges, Articulation and Transfer Agreements
Objectives:
• Activities/Appointments
The program was developed in the following five stages:
• Findings
- Community College students come from a diversity of backgrounds, ages, and
lifestyles.
- They enroll more than six million students in courses for credit, or almost
half of all undergraduate students.
- According to research when community-college students transfer, they perform
as well as students who initially enroll in a four-year institution.
- They develop articulation and transfer agreements with colleges and universities
not only in the state where they are located, but outside their states and provide
assistance to ensure a successful smooth transfer to their students.
- The Maricopa Community Colleges, the largest provider of job training in Arizona,
offer a special program called Achieving a College Education (ACE) which has
proven to be a solution to the drop out problem most schools are facing in Arizona.
- Arizona State University and the Maricopa Community Colleges have formed a
partnership through which students will earn an associate degree as they strive
for a baccalaureate degree. The alliance focuses on student retention and success
offering programs that meet students´ needs, making higher education accessible
and affordable, and expanding opportunities for students to support the economy
and the workforce needs.
- The transfer of California Community College students to California's public
four-year universities is facilitated through an electronic system for academic
planning (ASSIST) which delivers accurate, timely, and complete information.
This system operates as the official repository of articulation information
for the state of California.
- Community Colleges are eager to establish partnerships and develop projects
with Higher Education Institutions abroad.
• Follow-up/Next Steps
- Conduct Outreach activities to promote studies at Community Colleges
- Design presentations on transfer agreements and articulation process to share
with other colleagues
- Give a presentation at the Ministry of Education in my country so that they
become aware of the fact that Community Colleges are Higher Education Institutions
fully accredited in the US, and of the important role they play in the development
of the US Economy.
- Use all the knowledge I gained to contribute to the development of a plan
my host institution has to become a Community College in my country.
- Help my host institution to establish cooperation agreements with CC in the
US.
