A familiarization trip brought 25 international student advisers to visit selected colleges, universities, two-year colleges, and Intensive English Language Programs across Illinois. Four advisers representing China, Poland, Bolivia, and the Philippines received a tour of Lewis’ main campus in Romeoville, as well as learned about some of the highlights of the University’s academic programs. The trip was a joint effort between Study Illinois, an educational consortium dedicated to welcoming international students to Illinois, and EducationUSA, a network of nearly 500 advising and information centers that actively promote U.S. higher education in eight regions and 170 countries around the world. Study Illinois also works closely with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of International Trade; EducationUSA is supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Coordinated by Michael J. Fekete, Lewis Director of International Student Services, the event was the result of a direct collaboration with Andrew Sison, Lewis Dean of Admission; and Roberto Suarez, Program Coordinator for Multicultural and International Recruitment at Lewis. Many other University departments and offices also contributed their efforts toward the success of the visit, Fekete said. Current Lewis international students representing the advisers’ countries also participated, attending a luncheon that followed the program. Through this post-event gathering, the visiting advisers had an opportunity to receive personalized accounts of the value of a Lewis education from these students. Fekete said he hopes to host such a visit and other similar events every year. “My task now is to promote Lewis as a wonderful destination of study, with quality programs and an important mission,” he said. “This is the beginning of a long-term plan to let those around the world know the importance of a Lewis education.” Serving as an internationally friendly and welcoming institution enables the University to bring the world to campus, and increases students’ understanding of the larger global society, Fekete said. “The fact that many companies and positions are now global means that students are going to be looked at in terms of their foreign language skills, as well as their understanding of international markets and business trends,” he added. “The continued promotion of diversity and multiculturalism on campus makes Lewis a wonderful study abroad option for international students, and shows that Lewis is mirroring what is going on around the world.” According to Fekete, the visit is one way that Lewis is expanding its recruiting efforts to increase the University’s international student population. “A goal of the University’s strategic plan is to grow its [student] population, and international students are a part of that,” he said. The Institute of International Education reports that more than half of a million people from around the world studied in the United States last year, with 201,000 students choosing higher learning institutions in 10 of the nation’s major metropolitan areas. The Chicago-Naperville-Joliet region attracted more than 15,000 students in 2006, making Illinois the fifth most popular state to host international students. A resident of Oak Lawn, Fekete joined Lewis in February of 2007. From 2002-07, he was the International Student Admissions Specialist at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Ill., where he oversaw all aspects of international admissions. He also spent five years managing five international student centers in the metropolitan Chicago area for the Washington Post-owned Kaplan, Inc., a global provider of lifelong educational opportunities. A native of Pittsburgh, Fekete received a bachelor’s degree in Rhetoric from the University of Pittsburgh, and completed coursework at the School for International Training in Vermont and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. He also taught English in the Czech Republic at Charles University in Prague. In 1991, he was one of the first students to study abroad in post-Communist Hungary.

STUDENTS OF UNDERSERVED INDIAN STATE THRONG USEFI BOOTH FOR INFORMATION ON U.S. HIGHER EDUCATION Tuesday, 26 June 2007 During June 16-17, USEFI-Kolkata Regional Officer Sunrit Mullick and Educational Advising Services Associate Sudarshan Saha participated in an “Admissions Fair” at Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, an underserved state in Eastern India. The two-day fair attracted students from the city and neighboring areas. The USEFI staff distributed information materials and answered queries of the students and their parents relating to the prospects and procedures of higher education in the U.S. Results: Over 2,000 visitors were served during the two-day event. This was only USEFI’s second participation in an education fair in this city, which has historically been underserved by such events. USEFI now plans to make such outreach events more frequent in the state of Jharkhand.
