Message:
Thank you for inviting me to the celebration of 25 years of the USBT.
Unfortunately, your original invitation did not reach me for some
reason.I apologize for my late response.
I will not be able to attend NAFSA this year due to special events on
campus, unfortunately. Therefore, I will miss a celebration I would
truly like to attend, yours.
The very first year of the USBT was a major collaboration of the US
Information Agency, the College Board and NAFSA. As temporary
appointees to USIA, Patricia Biddinger and I worked with a team to
design and fund the program and the participation of 50 educational
advisors. I managed the program for USIA. The head of the office
(E/AS), Joe Bruns, and his deputy, Addie O'connell, were strong
supporters of the increasing the professional roles of the advisors.
The success of that first USBT convinced all the stakeholders to make
further investments and develop new structures to support the work
done around the world on behalf of US higher education.
I congratulate the advisors and celebrate the success of your many
contributions over the past 25 years (and more)!
