Fulbright Graduate Student Program

For: students to pursue graduate studies
Start date: August or September 2009
Program Length: 1 or 2 years
Application Deadline: May 16, 2008

Program Opportunities:

  • study grants to complete a 2-year master's degree program at an American university;
  • study grants to complete a 1-year (non-degree coursework) program at an American university.

Program Description:

This program provides an opportunity for graduate students to combine study and independent research in a variety of ways: research outside a degree program allows a student to specialize in a particular area; to re-qualify in a different area or to broaden an academic perspective; to earn a Master degree; to take advanced courses; to practice teaching through an assistantship in a university.

Eligibility & Requirements:

  • Ukrainian citizenship;
  • Residence in Ukraine at the period of the contest;
  • Master, Specialist or Bachelor degree at time of award (4th and 5th year students are eligible);
  • High level of proficiency in written and oral English
  • Quality for a U.S. J-1 visa which requires returning to Ukraine for 2 years following program completion.

Starting with 2007, the Fulbright Graduate Student Program will be expanded for candidates in science, technology, and engineering fields

Eligible Fields of Study: Aeronautics, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, Information Sciences, Materials Science, Mathematics, Neuroscience/Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Oceanography and Physics.

Please note that our emphasis continues to be on humanities and social sciences. The Fulbright Graduate Program encourages applicants pursing theoretical directions in economics; law students showing an interest in International Public Law, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Law and History of Law. The Program supports those young people who are interested in choosing narrow focused research areas with management of different sectors (Environmental Management, Educational Administration etc).
How to Apply:

By May 16, 2008 submit document packet:

  • completed application form,
  • 3 letters of recommendation,
  • a copy of education diploma, class transcript and grades (for 4th and 5th year students copy of class records).

All forms in this application are to be completed in English and printed from a computer. The letters should be written in English if possible. If they are not, an original English translation must be provided. Letters of reference must be submitted in sealed envelopes. Copies of your certified academic documents should be in Ukrainian. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Process:

Stage 1: Application Review (May-June 2008)
Stage 2: Interview for semi-finalists (August 2008).
Stage 3: Finalists take tests (October-November 2008): TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language) and GRE General (Graduate Record Examination).
Additionally, a GRE Subject Exam will be recommended for Master's candidates in the following fields of study: Biology; Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Mathematics; Psychology; and Physics (for instructions, contact the Fulbright Program Office).

The Fulbright finalists will be approved by the Board of Fulbright Supervisors (BFS). Placements at U.S. universities will be finalized by April 2009.

The Fulbright Office in Kyiv will make all testing arrangements and cover all costs of the application, selection, and testing process (travel to and stay in Kyiv, exam fees, etc.). The Program will provide visa support for the grantees.
