GRE ORIENTATION INFORMATION Graduate Record Examinations
1)
Paper and pencils are provided. Other than the required identification,
candidates are not allowed to take anything with them into the testing
room. Candidates should store the rest of their belongings in the designated
area.
2)
After candidates have signed in and have provided the required documentation,
check-in will be performed. This is done on an individual basis. Candidates
will then be seated at their designated workstations.
3)
Upon entering or leaving the testing room, candidates must sign the Test
Center Log, mark the time and show their Ids.
4)
Candidates should be aware that each test session is proctored and videotaped.
5)
Once seated, candidates begin the computer-testing process with a Tutorial
Program. Candidates are encouraged to take as much time with the Tutorial
as they need in order to become comfortable with using the computer and
understanding the directions. The Tutorial is divided as follows :
| Part I |
How to use the mouse ? |
| Part II |
How to answer questions ? |
| Part III |
How to use the tools ? |
| Part IV |
How to scroll ? |
6)
After the Tutorial a profile questionnaire section will appear containing
questions about gender, undergraduate studies, etc. You will also be asked
if you want a score report sent to your undergraduate institution.
7)
Then the actual exam begins. It consists of 3 sections in no particular
order to the exam. The sections are:
| VERBAL |
30 questions |
30 minutes |
| QUANTITATIVE |
28 questions |
45 minutes |
| ANALYTICAL |
35 questions |
60 minutes |
8)
After the second section, there is an optional 10 minute break, which can
be taken either at the workstation or outside the testing room. In order
for the exam to continue once the break is over, an Administrator will
need to go to the workstation and reactive the program.
9)
Candidates cannot skip a question. Once a question has been answered and
confirmed, there is no possibility to return to it.
10)
Research Sections : GRE examinees will be administered three operational
sections (these include a Verbal section, a Quantitative section and an
Analytical section) and either an UNIDENTIFIED Quantitative pre-test section
or an IDENTIFIED Writing research section. Examinees should refer to the
on-line information and direction screens for assistance with any questions
they may have pertaining to this test. You should not advise or attempt
to assist examinees in determining which sections can be omitted or how
to exit sections to receive no score. IMPORTANT NOTE:
Some examinees will be asked to write an essay as their task in the IDENTIFIED
Writing research section. These examinees will have a choice of typing
the essay portion on the computer or handwriting it. If an examinee chooses
to handwrite their essay, please be sure to give the examinee their GRE
Writing Test Handwritten Essay booklet prior to executing the Administrator’s
Key Sequence. Examinees choosing to handwrite must write their EXAMINEE
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, as presented on the screen, on their GRE Writing
Test Handwritten Essay booklet, prior to beginning the section.
11)
After the exam, candidates will have the option of viewing their test scores.
Candidates should be aware that test scores are not printed out and Administrators
do not have access to test scores. Candidates should write their scores
down on the scratch paper, and then transfer them onto another piece of
paper after leaving the testing room. Score results will be mailed
from ETS approximately 10 to 15 days after testing.
12)
At the end of the test, examinees will have the possibility of selecting
from a list up to 4 graduate institutions to which their score results
will be sent by ETS. They do not need to know the code number of the University,
but should know: the State in which it is located, the Name of the University,
and the Name of the Department.
13)
People who wish to have scores sent to more than 4 Universities need to
request an "Additional Score Report Request Form", which is available at
the Test Centre. The cost will be $13 per University listing.
