TOWARDS THE U.S.A.
SUGGESTED DATES TO REMEMBER

12-18 Months before departure 1. Evaluate your reasons for wanting to study in the US, taking into consideration: 
· English proficiency and academic ability 
· motivation and objectives - why in US 
· Your future plans - academic or employment possibilities 
· time required for an American degree 
· estimated cost of study and funding possibilities

JUNE-AUGUST 2. Find out where your specialization is taught and select 20 - 35 universities on the basis of : 
· their programs 
· accreditation 
· cost, location, and size 
· availability of the financial aid for foreign students 
· degrees offered 
· level of selectivity
For undergraduates : "Petersons' Selection" computer program "The Index of Majors Gourman's "A Rating of Undergraduate Programs Peterson's "Guide to Four Year Colleges "The College Handbook"
JULY-AUGUST 3. Find out which standardized tests are  required (TOEFL, etc.) and register to take them in October or November.  
JUNE-AUGUST 4. Write to these American universities to request application forms for admission and financial aid. 
5. Begin to prepare necessary papers: 
· transcript; 
· recommendation letters; 
· personal statement
 
OCTOBER - DECEMBER 6. After receiving the college information, application and financial aid forms. 
7. Decide to which universities you would like to apply. 
8. Complete college application forms. 9. Read all instructions carefully and fill out the form neatly. 
10. Send applications well in advance of deadlines.  The sooner you send them, the more money the school has available, and mail from Ukraine may take a month or more to reach the States. 
 
MARCH - JUNE 11. Wait for acceptance and rejection letters. 
12. Contact universities who have not yet informed you of their decision
APRIL - JUNE 13. If you are accepted at more than one university, accept the offer at your preferred institution and decline the others.  Contact the university housing office to reserve housing for the coming year.  Contact the university's Foreign Student Advisor for any specific information concerning your arrival.   
JUNE-JULY 14. Attend Pre-Departure Orientation at the EAC
